Graduated, Moved and Settled
Posted June 9, 2010 at 22:10 in blog
So much has happened since we last chatted, blogosphere. I have a four-year degree now! Hooray! On April 30, I walked down the aisle, got to sit on the stage and was given a B.S. in journalism. I hugged some great mentors and role models during my walk from college into the real world.
I was also awarded the journalism college-wide Dean’s Cup for Service and the Society of Professional Journalists department award, which was such an amazing honor.
Then I went to Disney World for four days and braved the Tower of Terror. (Can that thing drop any faster? Gravity, yeesh.)
After having some summer fun, it was time to pack up my things in a bunch o’ boxes and ship myself off to Indianapolis, where I am currently residing in a creaky, two-story house that has a slight mice problem and has already given me one carbon monoxide scare. The adventures of the Midwest! I love where I live, though, and the neighborhood’s got character.
It is now my third week at the Society of Professional Journalists National Headquarters, and I am loving it so far. I get to help with SPJ communications projects. I also hope to put some ideas into effect soon regarding revamping the website. I am their Freedom of Information intern, so it has been interesting keeping up with FOI industry issues on a daily basis.
I’ll get to write articles for the FOI edition of the SPJ Quill magazine, and I’m excited to get that up and running soon. I’ve also been updating the FOI FYI blog and SPJ Works blog with links, commentary and tips.
I had spent the spring semester joking with my friends that once I moved up to Indianapolis, I was just going to dress up like Indiana Jones the whole time. What a conversation starter!
But alas, I thought better of it once I got up here. There would be a certain creepiness factor associated with constantly speaking in Harrison Ford quotes. (And I pictured that Indiana residents would not hesitate to remark sarcastically, “Oh, I’ve never heard THAT ONE BEFORE.”)
Expect more constant updates coming your way. I’m blogging from the real world now as a lady looking for a job, and I expect more adventures to ensue from that.
Have a happy Wednesday evening, everyone!
