Nearing the end of summer: A journalistic update

Posted August 8, 2009 at 21:09 in

My senior year officially starts Aug. 24. It’s an exciting yet terrifying thought, that in a year I’ll be thrown out into the real world. I think my job search will start once school starts.

So I have stayed in Gainesville this summer, and a lot has transpired. Here’s a bit of what’s been going on lately…

- My internship with WCJB TV20 is coming to a close next week. They recently hired me on as an associate producer, so I’ll be working with them this fall.

- I’m staying on as president of the Society of Professional Journalists UF Chapter this year, and we’re starting to plan out the fall schedule. The publicity chair and myself are representing UF at the national conference in Indianapolis! That will be held at the end of the month.

- My street newspaper article, “A Voice in the Streets,” is going to be published in the Aug. 15 edition of Streetvibes in Cincinnati, Ohio. I’m thrilled to be able to contribute to a street newspaper, and the editor over there has been extremely helpful.

- I’m still contributing to The North Florida Herald when I can, and about two weeks ago I had a story in the paper about a local journalist who passed away. She seemed like a really cool lady.
Another article for The Herald is currently in the works.

- I’ve been helping out with a major film project that Theatre Strike Force, a UF improv organization, started working on this summer. We are creating a TV series called “Oppie” for the dorm channel. Visit the Oppie blog to see what has been accomplished so far, oppie.tumblr.com.
I have helped out with costumes and props and acted as an extra.
My official titles are Locations Manager and Music Director for the show. I’m in charge of creating the music for Oppie, and I also talk to businesses and the university to get permission to shoot at harder locations.

- Today, Aug. 8, seemed like a really popular day for weddings. I’ve still been taking pictures this summer with my new Nikon D5000, and you can take a look at some of my photos at my Flickr account.

Leaving with bubbles

Congratulations to my friend who got married today! She looked so beautiful in her flowing white dress and veil.

Hello There

I currently live in Fayetteville, N.C., less than a half-hour from Fort Bragg. Humvees, Black Hawks and the pounding of artillery is just commonplace here, as is seeing soldiers, from privates to generals, doing what they do best.

These things are all part of my job. I am a military reporter at The Fayetteville Observer and the staff writer for Elite Magazine, the first military lifestyle magazine serving Fort Bragg and the Sandhills region.

I am a University of Florida graduate (Go Gators), and I have worked for the Society of Professional Journalists national headquarters, The Independent Florida Alligator, The North Florida Herald in High Springs, Fla., WCJB TV20 and ABC News On Campus.

I also love to collaborate on creative projects, whether it be with music, poetry, fiction or improv. If you need help editing a chapter of your short story or are looking for someone to jam with, I’m your gal.

If you would like to get in touch with me, feel free to e-mail me at aprildudash@gmail.com.
